How to Calculate the Correct Dose of Epinephrine in ACLS

Medical ProCerts teaches the latest in ACLS drug doses and access routes, including the correct dose for epinephrine.

What is Epinephrine Used For in ACLS?

Epinephrine is a critical medication used in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) to manage cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis, and other life-threatening emergencies. It is important to calculate the correct dose of Epinephrine to ensure that it is effective in restoring the patient’s circulation and preventing further harm.

What is the Correct Dose of Epinephrine Used in ACLS?

According to the American Heart Association (AHA)’s 2020 guide, the correct dose of Epinephrine should be calculated based on the patient’s age/weight and condition.

For adult patients in cardiac arrest, administer 1 mg of Epinephrine IV/IO every 3-5 minutes.

Currently, the recommended ET tube dose of epinephrine is 10 times the IV/IO dose, and the typical dose of other drugs is 2–3 times the IV/IO dose.

For blood pressure support during post-cardiac arrest care, consider vasopressor administration to meet the goal for SBP (systolic blood pressure) or MAP (mean arterial pressure) with a 2–10 mcg/min IV infusion of epinephrine.

Important Considerations When Using Epinephrine in ACLS Treatments

It is crucial to remember that epinephrine can have significant side effects, such as increased heart rate and blood pressure, and should therefore only be administered when indicated and in the appropriate dose.

Additionally, it is important to monitor the patient’s response to epinephrine and adjust the dosage accordingly. If the patient does not respond to the initial dose, other interventions, such as advanced airway management or defibrillation, should be considered.
